Béla Iványi-Grünwald was his master in Nagybánya. In Paris he quit the Julian Academy and the Académie de la Grande Chaumiére in 1905, to became a follower of Matisse, and one of the first students to attend his school. He participated in the Salon d’Automne with the Fauves in 1907 and also had solo exhibitions in Paris. El Greco had a powerful effect upon his formal language after he had seen his works in the course of a study tour of Spain in 1911. Returning to Hungary he worked in Nagybánya, and then moved to Kecskemét, following his former teacher. Between 1920 and 1923, he lived in Germany with his wife Margit Gráber, a fellow painter, coming into contact with expressionist aims. He became a member of KUT in 1924 and a regular participant in their exhibitions. He worked in the artist colony of Szentendre after 1930.
